Causes of Water Damage
Water damage can occur due to a myriad of reasons, including:
- Broken or leaking pipes
- Roof leaks
- Severe weather events, such as hurricanes and floods
- Faulty appliances, including dishwashers and washing machines
- Poor plumbing maintenance
Types of Water Damage
Depending on the source and severity, water damage can be classified into three categories:
- Category 1: Clean Water Damage
- Category 2: Gray Water Damage
- Category 3: Black Water Damage
Caused by clear water sources, such as burst pipes or a leaky faucet. This water poses minimal health risks.
Results from contaminated water, such as from washing machines or dishwasher leaks. These waters contain microorganisms that may pose health hazards.
The most hazardous type of water damage, caused by sewage, floodwater, or other highly contaminated sources. Black water contains pathogens and bacteria that can cause serious health issues.
Is Water Damage the Same as Flood Damage?
While both water damage and flood damage involve the intrusion of water, they are distinct. Flood damage refers specifically to water damage caused by a natural event, such as a hurricane or heavy rainfall. Flood damage typically affects large areas and can result in substantial property damage and displacement of populations. Water damage, on the other hand, can be caused by a wide range of events, including those within a building or home.
